INCA EXPEDITIONS invites you to experience the LARES TREK TO MACHU PICCHU. This journey takes you along a unique route, showcasing stunning landscapes that feature majestic glaciers, vibrant blue lakes, cascading waterfalls, and groups of llamas and alpacas. You will pass through some of the most remote indigenous communities, offering a rare chance to connect with the local people. The trek culminates with a guided tour of the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel, followed by some free time before your train ride back to Cusco through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Note: The 3-day Lares Trek does not include a visit to the Lares Hot Springs, which is only available on the 4-day Lares Trek.
The adventure begins with an early departure from Cusco, leaving the historic city behind as the journey unfolds through the fertile Calca Valley. The road winds between green farmlands and towering mountains, gradually transitioning into the remote and dramatic landscapes of the Andes. This scenic drive leads to the renowned Lares Hot Springs, where naturally heated mineral waters provide a moment of relaxation and renewal, an ideal introduction to the trek ahead.
After enjoying the thermal baths, the route continues on foot, ascending through traditional Andean communities such as Huacahuasi and Isaycocha. Along the way, travelers witness authentic highland life: stone-built homes, herds of alpacas grazing freely, and welcoming locals who preserve centuries-old customs. By late afternoon, the trail opens into the tranquil Patacancha Valley. Surrounded by majestic peaks and profound silence, the village of Patacancha offers a peaceful overnight setting, where crisp mountain air and a star-filled sky bring the day to a perfect close.
As the first light of morning illuminates the valley, the trek continues toward Willoq, one of the most culturally intact Andean communities in the region. The route follows ancient highland paths across rolling terrain, offering an authentic glimpse into traditional mountain life before reaching the remarkable Inca archaeological site of Pumamarka. Surrounded by agricultural terraces and finely crafted stone structures, the site reflects its former strategic and ceremonial significance within the Inca world.
The trail then descends into the Sacred Valley, arriving at the historic town of Ollantaytambo, a living testament to Inca engineering and urban design. Towering stone walls and narrow cobblestone streets speak of resilience, power, and continuity. From here, a scenic train journey follows the course of the Urubamba River to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. The evening unfolds at a relaxed pace, allowing time to rest and reflect, while anticipation quietly builds for the unforgettable experience awaiting the next day.
At first light, as mist gently drapes the mountains, the journey reaches its defining moment with the ascent to Machu Picchu. As the clouds slowly part, the legendary citadel emerges—its stone temples, sacred plazas, and finely carved terraces seamlessly integrated into the mountainside. Exploring this extraordinary sanctuary is both humbling and inspiring, marking the emotional and spiritual pinnacle of the trek.
Following the guided visit, the route descends back through Ollantaytambo and continues onward to Cusco. The return journey offers time for reflection, carrying memories of secluded Andean villages, restorative thermal waters, ancestral trails, and one of the world’s most remarkable cultural treasures.
The Lares Trek 3 Days is more than a path to Machu Picchu—it is a journey woven step by step through the living heart of the Andes.
