Visiting the 4 Day Tambopata Jungle Reserve offers you a unique experience in the Amazon jungle. The first day we immersed ourselves in the diversity of jungle life by exploring the upper part of Tambopata.
This area has an abundance of flora and fauna, and several species of birds, monkeys and other wild animals.
We will visit Cachuela Parrot Clay Lick, an amazing natural spectacle. Here, macaws and parrots congregate to eat essential minerals on the clay walls, where we can appreciate a spectacle full of biodiversity unique to the region.
This phenomenon provides the opportunity to admire these birds in their natural habitat.
On your trip to the Reserve we will visit Sandoval Lake, we will go by boat on the lake, observing alligators, otters and water birds. Sandoval Lake offers a fascinating contrast to the lushness of Tambopata and the bustle of Cachuela Parrot Clay Lick.
The Tour to the Tambopata reserve will give you an exciting experience. Connecting with nature in this remote corner of the Amazon is a unique opportunity to appreciate the importance of preserving these ecosystems for future generations.
In short, the 4-day excursion is a complete immersion in the wonderful biodiversity of the Tambopata National Reserve.
At 08:00 AM, we will transfer you to Puerto Acosta dock, where you will board a motorized boat for a 30-minute journey along the Madre de Dios River to our exclusive Amazon Ecolodge.
Upon arrival, our team will assist you with the check-in process. After a short rest, we will begin our exploration within the Tambopata National Reserve.
Canopy Walk
We will start with a short 200-meter walk from the lodge to the Canopy Tower, which stands 35 meters high and is built at the base of a massive Lupuna tree, an iconic symbol of the Amazon due to its impressive size.
Throughout this experience, you will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of bird species. Our knowledgeable local guide will provide detailed explanations about the flora and fauna of the region.
Zipline Adventure
After enjoying the canopy walk, we will continue with an exciting zipline experience. Our local instructor will provide safety instructions and helpful tips to ensure you fully enjoy the activity.
Once ready, you will glide along a 190-meter-long zipline. At the end, one of our instructors will assist you in crossing a 100-meter suspension bridge, after which you will return to the starting point using another zipline.
Following this thrilling experience, we will return to the lodge for lunch, where our team will serve an authentic Amazonian meal. After lunch, you will have time to relax in the hammocks at the lodge.
Kayaking on the Madre de Dios River
Early in the afternoon, we will set out on an exciting kayaking adventure. Kayaks will be prepared at the lodge, and our staff will assist you with all necessary safety equipment.
Once everything is ready, we will begin the activity, accompanied by a safety boat that will follow the group to ensure everyone’s well-being.
You will also have the chance to cool off from the Amazon heat by taking a refreshing swim in the waters of the Madre de Dios River.
Monkey Island Visit
After kayaking, we will board our boat for a 15-minute ride downstream to Monkey Island. As the name suggests, this island is home to several species of monkeys.
Here, you may observe groups of capuchin monkeys, including brown capuchins (Cebus apella) and white-fronted capuchins (Cebus albifrons), among others. Many of these species are relatively friendly. Accompanied by our expert guide, you will have the opportunity to observe them closely and learn about their behavior within the Tambopata National Reserve.
After this experience, we will return to the lodge at approximately 04:30 PM, where you can enjoy a beautiful Amazon sunset.
Caiman Night Excursion
After sunset, we will head out on a night boat excursion equipped with spotlights and headlamps to search for caimans. Their glowing eyes make them easier to locate in the darkness.
During this activity, you may observe white caimans and dwarf caimans in their natural habitat.
At 07:30 PM, we will return to the lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
You will wake up to the soothing sounds of birds singing in the surrounding rainforest. Our staff will serve a delicious traditional Amazonian breakfast, featuring fresh fruit juice, a cup of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee, eggs, pancakes, fried plantains, and other local specialties.
At 09:30 AM, we will board a boat and cross the river to reach the control station, where local authorities will register each visitor before entering the protected area. From there, we will begin an approximately one-hour hike, covering about three kilometers through the rainforest until we reach Lake Sandoval.
During the hike, you will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of flora and fauna. With some luck, you may spot giant river otters and other mammals that inhabit this remarkable ecosystem.
Upon arrival at the shores of Lake Sandoval, we will serve a delicious lunch surrounded by the beauty of the rainforest. Afterward, we will board a paddle canoe and navigate toward the center of the lake to observe more birds and wildlife.
This region is home to species such as hoatzins, cormorants, and anhingas. On special occasions, travelers have been fortunate enough to spot the iconic giant river otters, often called the “playful wolves of the river.”
After enjoying this immersive experience in the unique ecosystem of Lake Sandoval, we will return to the lodge.
At approximately 06:30 PM, we will set out on an evening walk to discover a greater variety of nocturnal wildlife within the protected area. Our guide will provide detailed explanations about the species encountered along the way.
Around 07:30 PM, we will return to the lodge to enjoy dinner.
You will begin the day with a traditional Amazonian breakfast served at the lodge. At approximately 08:00 AM, we will set out on a guided walk to a nearby native community, where you will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about their daily lifestyle and cultural traditions.
During the visit, we will meet an indigenous family descended from ancient warriors and hunters. This experience will allow you to witness their ancestral customs and traditions, which have been preserved for generations.
The community is also known for their traditional artwork, and if you wish, you will have the opportunity to purchase handcrafted paintings directly from the family as a meaningful souvenir.
After visiting the native family, we will continue with a boat excursion to a nearby riverbank, where we will enjoy a rustic fishing experience. The waters in this area are home to several species of fish, including catfish, maiden fish, sardines, and piranhas.
We will bring the fish back to the lodge, where our chef will prepare it using traditional Amazonian spices for lunch.
Following lunch, you will have free time to rest and relax in the hammocks at the lodge, enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the rainforest.
Later in the evening, a delicious dinner will be served at the lodge.
On the final day of your Tambopata Peru tour, the adventure begins early in the morning with a boat transfer from the lodge to visit the Parrot Clay Lick. Upon arrival, we will take a moment to settle in and quietly wait as groups of parrots gradually descend to the clay wall to feed on the mineral-rich clay.
During this experience, you will have the opportunity to observe blue-headed parrots, aurora parrots, parakeets, and several other bird species that gather at this unique natural site.
This activity lasts approximately one hour, giving you plenty of time to take photos and videos while enjoying spectacular views of these colorful birds against the backdrop of a beautiful Amazon sunrise.
At around 07:00 AM, we will return to the lodge for breakfast. After breakfast, you will be transferred back to our office in Puerto Maldonado.
Depending on the departure time of your flight or bus, we will arrange your transfer to the airport or bus terminal, ensuring a smooth conclusion to your Amazon adventure.
