You’ll enter Machu Picchu via Aguas Calientes, and your guided tour will follow the circuit and route available for your travel date, according to the regulations established by the Peruvian government. The specific circuit is subject to availability at the time your entrance ticket is issued.

We’ll kick off early, around 4:00 a.m., with a pickup from your hotel in Cusco. From there, we’ll travel for approximately 4 hours, passing through Anta and Mollepata before reaching Challacancha. During the drive, keep an eye out for spectacular views of the snow-capped Salkantay and Humantay Mountains, towering above the surrounding valleys. For the Incas, these mountains were considered sacred apus, and it’s easy to understand why when you see their majestic presence.
After a couple of hours, we’ll make a short stop in Mollepata to use the restroom, explore some local shops, and, if desired, enjoy a light breakfast. We’ll then continue to Challacancha, where our trekking adventure officially begins.
At Challacancha, we’ll meet our support team, who will organize the equipment and prepare everything for the trek. Around 9:30 a.m., we’ll begin hiking toward Soraypampa, our first campsite and home for the night.
The trail takes us through beautiful valleys and along the mountainside. Along the way, you’ll see an old aqueduct that continues to provide water to local farmers in the valleys below. After approximately 3 hours of hiking (about 7 km / 4.35 miles), we’ll arrive at Soraypampa, where we’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch.
After lunch and a short rest, we’ll begin our hike to the spectacular Humantay Lake, located at approximately 4,200 m (13,779 ft). The turquoise-green waters of the lake beautifully reflect the surrounding glaciers and towering mountains, creating one of the most unforgettable landscapes of the Salkantay Trek.
After exploring Humantay Lake and taking time to admire the scenery and capture photographs, we’ll descend back to Soraypampa.
Upon returning to Soraypampa, you’ll enjoy a special Premium Glamping experience at our Sky Lodge Dome. Instead of traditional camping, you’ll spend the night in a comfortable panoramic dome equipped with a comfortable bed, warm bedding, private bathroom, and hot shower. At this high-altitude campsite, the dome provides the perfect place to relax and recover after an exciting day of trekking.
As evening arrives, you can enjoy the spectacular sunset over the surrounding mountains and valleys. After dinner, relax inside your Sky Lodge Dome and admire the clear Andean night sky. On a clear night, you may see thousands of stars and, with a little luck, even a shooting star.
It’s the perfect way to end your first day—surrounded by nature, comfort, and the magnificent landscapes of the high Andes.
We’ll wake up early, around 5:30 a.m., to enjoy breakfast before beginning one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of the trek: the hike to Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the entire route.
From Soraypampa, we’ll begin a steady ascent of approximately 7 km (4.34 miles), taking around 3 hours. As we gain altitude, the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular, with breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and deep Andean valleys.
Finally, we’ll reach Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m (15,190 ft). Reaching this point is one of the most memorable moments of the journey. From the summit, we’ll enjoy incredible panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and experience the powerful presence of Salkantay Mountain, considered a sacred apu by the ancient Incas.
After taking time to enjoy the scenery and capture photographs, we’ll begin our descent. The trail gradually leads us toward lower elevations, where the climate and vegetation begin to change. We’ll continue downhill toward our lunch stop, enjoying spectacular mountain scenery along the way.
In the afternoon, we’ll continue descending into the upper Amazon region and cloud forest, a completely different environment from the high-altitude landscapes we experienced earlier in the day. The transformation is remarkable as we move from the cold mountain climate into a warmer and more humid environment filled with lush vegetation, colorful plants, exotic flowers, and diverse wildlife.
At the end of the hike, we’ll arrive at Chaullay, where a special Premium Glamping experience awaits us at our Sky Lodge Dome.
Instead of traditional camping, you’ll spend the night in a comfortable dome equipped with a comfortable bed, warm bedding, private bathroom, and hot shower, providing the perfect place to relax and recharge after one of the most demanding days of the Salkantay Trek.
In the evening, you can relax inside your Sky Lodge Dome and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings of the cloud forest, surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation.
Today’s adventure takes us deeper into the beautiful Santa Teresa Valley, where the high mountains gradually give way to warmer, greener landscapes. Along the way, we’ll walk beside rivers and waterfalls and pass through lush plantations of coffee, avocado, passion fruit, and other local crops.
The trail offers a fascinating change in scenery as we descend further into the warmer climate of the cloud forest. You’ll have the opportunity to observe local farming practices and, depending on the season, taste some of the delicious fruits grown in the region.
After continuing through the valley, we’ll reach the La Playa and Sahuayaco area, where we’ll enjoy lunch and take some time to relax before continuing to Loreta, our third and final Sky Lodge Dome campsite.
In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a special local coffee experience. We’ll visit an organic coffee farm where you’ll learn about the cultivation, harvesting, processing, and preparation of locally grown coffee. You’ll also have the opportunity to taste freshly prepared Peruvian coffee while learning more about the traditions of local coffee-producing families.
For those who would like to relax after the day’s hike, there is also an optional visit to the Cocalmayo Hot Springs. This activity is available at an additional cost and can be arranged directly with your guide depending on time, weather, and availability. The natural thermal pools of Cocalmayo are a wonderful way to relax and soothe your muscles while enjoying the surrounding mountain landscape.
After the coffee experience and optional hot springs visit, we’ll return to Loreta La Playa, where you’ll spend the night in our exclusive Sky Lodge Dome.
The dome provides a comfortable and relaxing environment surrounded by the lush landscapes of the cloud forest. After another rewarding day on the Salkantay Trek, you can enjoy a comfortable bed, warm bedding, and the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains.
Just like the previous mornings, our trekking chef will wake you up early with a warm cup of coca tea served right to your bed. After getting ready, you’ll enjoy your final breakfast prepared by our talented chef before beginning another exciting day of adventure.
We’ll start hiking directly from Loreta La Playa, following an original section of the Inca Trail through the lush cloud forest. The trail gradually climbs through tropical vegetation and offers spectacular views of the Santa Teresa Valley and surrounding mountains.
After approximately 2 hours of uphill hiking, we’ll reach the fascinating Llactapata Inca archaeological site, located directly across the valley from Machu Picchu. This is one of the most remarkable viewpoints along the Salkantay route, offering your first distant views of the legendary Inca citadel.
From Llactapata, you’ll be able to see Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and Machu Picchu Mountain from a unique perspective. Together with your professional guide, you’ll explore the archaeological site and learn about its historical importance, its connection to the surrounding Inca settlements, and the remarkable relationship between these sacred mountains and Machu Picchu.
You’ll have plenty of time to take photographs, enjoy the panoramic scenery, and appreciate the incredible landscape before continuing the trek.
After exploring Llactapata, we’ll begin an approximately 2-hour descent through the lush vegetation toward Hidroelectrica. Along the way, you’ll continue to enjoy occasional views of Machu Picchu while walking through the warm cloud forest.
We’ll arrive at the Hidroelectrica station, where we’ll stop for lunch and take some time to rest. One of the highlights of this area is the impressive 300-meter-high waterfall, whose hydroelectric system contributes to supplying electricity to the region.
After lunch, we’ll continue toward Intiwatana, an ancient Inca carved stone associated with astronomical observation. According to local tradition, it was connected to the Inca understanding of the sun and the agricultural calendar.
From Intiwatana, we’ll continue along the railway tracks toward Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu.
At this point, you’ll have two options:
Train Option: If you feel tired after the day’s hike, you can take the train to Aguas Calientes for an additional cost of approximately US$39, subject to availability.
Walking Option: If you prefer to continue walking, you can hike for approximately 3 hours alongside the railway tracks through the warm and lush cloud forest. This scenic route follows the famous path historically associated with Hiram Bingham, the American explorer who brought international attention to Machu Picchu in the early 20th century.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you’ll check into your accommodation, enjoy dinner, and have time to rest before the exciting visit to Machu Picchu the following day.
Note: During the rainy season, the Llactapata Trail can become slippery or unsafe due to weather and trail conditions. In such cases, the itinerary or route may be modified by the guide to prioritize the safety of all travelers.
Today marks the exciting finale of our trek as we finally reach Machu Picchu, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After a restful night in Aguas Calientes, we’ll wake up early and begin our journey to Machu Picchu. We will start walking between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m., depending on the entrance time assigned for your Machu Picchu visit and the circuit available for your travel date.
You can choose to hike from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu or take the shuttle bus at an additional cost. The early start allows us to reach the citadel in the morning and make the most of our visit.
Upon entering Machu Picchu, you’ll enjoy a professional guided tour, during which your guide will introduce you to the fascinating history, architecture, and cultural significance of this extraordinary Inca citadel. Depending on the circuit and route available for your travel date, you may visit important areas such as temples, terraces, ceremonial spaces, agricultural sectors, and other remarkable Inca structures.
The Machu Picchu circuit and route are subject to availability and are assigned according to the regulations established by the Peruvian government. The duration of your visit may also vary depending on the circuit and route assigned.
After the guided tour, depending on the circuit and the time available, you may have additional time to enjoy the scenery, take photographs, and appreciate the incredible views of the surrounding mountains.
Optional additional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain may be available only with the corresponding entrance permits purchased in advance. Other optional areas may also be available depending on the circuit assigned and current regulations.
Once your Machu Picchu visit is complete, we’ll return to Aguas Calientes by bus or on foot, depending on your preference and the time available.
Your train departure time will be assigned according to the Machu Picchu entrance schedule and availability. The train may depart at a different time depending on your assigned visit and the train service available for your travel date.
Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, our private transportation will be waiting to transfer you back to Cusco. Depending on the train schedule and road conditions, you can expect to arrive in Cusco in the evening.
This unforgettable journey comes to an end after experiencing some of the most spectacular landscapes, archaeological sites, and cultural treasures of the Peruvian Andes.

The 5-Day Salkantay Trek is one of the most exciting hikes you can do if you want to visit Machu Picchu. It’s a challenging journey that takes you through high mountains, down into tropical jungles, and finally to the famous ruins. Each day feels like a new adventure, with different landscapes and experiences. This trek is perfect for people who want more than just a simple walk to Machu Picchu.
5-Day Salkantay Trek
There are many tours available for the Salkantay Trek 5 Days, but it’s important to choose the right one. Some tours include more stops, like visiting Humantay Lake, which is a beautiful extra. Machu Picchu Expeditions offers great tours that include experienced guides and comfortable camping. They know how to make the Classic Salkantay Trek enjoyable and safe.
The weather on the 5-Day Salkantay Trek changes a lot. You can start the day in cold, windy mountain weather and end it in warm, humid jungle air. The higher you go, the colder it gets. At night, it can be freezing, especially when you camp near Salkantay Pass. But as you go down, the temperature gets warmer. Be prepared for rain, too, it can happen anytime, especially in the jungle areas.

5-Day Salkantay Trek
Before you start the Classic Salkantay Trek, it’s important to prepare. Spend a few days in Cusco to get used to the altitude. Drink lots of water and don’t push yourself too hard in the beginning. The altitude makes it harder to breathe, and you don’t want to get sick. Take it slow and listen to your body.
Not everyone can do the Salkantay Trek 5 Days. It’s a tough hike, especially because of the high altitude. People with heart problems or breathing issues should talk to a doctor before going. Also, the trail is long and steep in some parts, so it’s not for beginners. You need to be in good physical shape to enjoy it fully.
After the trek, you’ll need tickets to enter Machu Picchu. It’s a good idea to buy them in advance because they sell out fast, especially during the high season. Some tour packages include the tickets, so ask about that when booking with us.
The Salkantay Trek 5 days reaches some very high altitudes. The highest point is Salkantay Pass, which is about 15,000 feet above sea level. After that, the trail goes down into the jungle, where the altitude is lower, around 6,500 feet. The change in altitude is one of the most interesting parts of the trek, but it can also be tough on your body. That’s why it’s important to take your time and rest when you need to.
A mandatory pre-trek briefing will be held at 5:00 p.m. on the evening before your trek at our Cusco office:
INCAS EXPEDITIONS – Cusco Office
265 Garcilaso Street, Office 7, 2nd Floor, Historic Center, Cusco
During the briefing, your professional guide will explain the itinerary, safety recommendations, weather conditions, packing requirements, and other important details to ensure you are fully prepared for your trek.
If you are unable to attend in person, please contact us via WhatsApp at least 48 hours in advance to arrange a virtual briefing.
Your main luggage can be safely stored at our office or left at your hotel while you are trekking. We recommend taking only the essential belongings required for the trek.

Weather conditions along the Salkantay Trek can change rapidly due to significant variations in altitude.
We strongly recommend dressing in layers and bringing appropriate clothing for rain, cold temperatures, sun exposure, and warmer conditions in the lower valleys.

We specialize in small-group trekking experiences.
Maximum group size: 10 travelers
Typical group size: 2–6 travelers
Small groups allow for greater flexibility, personalized attention, and a more comfortable trekking experience.
Each group is supported by an experienced trekking team, including professional guides, trekking chefs, horse handlers, and support staff.
The number of support animals may vary depending on the group size, itinerary, weather conditions, and logistical requirements.
You will receive a duffel bag for personal belongings that will be transported by our support team during the trek.

Train schedules may vary. Your final train departure time will be confirmed according to the available service.

A Vistadome train upgrade may be available for an additional fee, subject to availability.
The Vistadome service offers panoramic windows and an enhanced onboard experience. Please request the upgrade in advance so we can check availability for your travel date.
Machu Picchu Circuit & Visit Time
Your Machu Picchu entrance circuit and route are subject to availability and the regulations established by the Peruvian government.
The specific circuit, entrance time, and duration of your visit will depend on the ticket assigned for your travel date.
For this reason, the exact timing of the morning hike, Machu Picchu visit, and return train may vary.
Tipping
Tipping is optional and not mandatory.
If you are satisfied with the service provided by your guide, trekking chef, horse handlers, and support staff, a tip is a customary way to show your appreciation for their hard work.
Any gratuity should always be based on your personal satisfaction with the service.

At INCAS EXPEDITIONS, we are committed to responsible and sustainable tourism.
As a locally owned Cusco tour operator, we work with local guides, cooks, horse handlers, communities, and suppliers whenever possible.
Our goal is to ensure that tourism contributes positively to local families and communities while promoting respect for the environment, Andean culture, and the people who make your Salkantay Trek possible.

Yes. We strongly recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco before beginning the Salkantay Trek.
Cusco is already at high altitude, and the route reaches approximately 4,630 meters (15,190 feet) at Salkantay Pass. Acclimatization gives your body time to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels, although it cannot completely eliminate the risk of altitude sickness.
During your acclimatization period, we recommend:
If you experience a severe headache, worsening nausea, dizziness, confusion, or unusual shortness of breath, inform your guide immediately. Severe or worsening symptoms require prompt medical assessment.
Weather conditions in the Andes can change quickly, particularly around Salkantay Pass. Rain, strong winds, cold temperatures, or other adverse conditions may affect the hiking route and daily schedule.

Any alternative route, transportation arrangement, or schedule adjustment will depend on trail conditions, local authorities, and operational availability.
We recommend bringing waterproof clothing, warm layers, sturdy hiking boots, and essential trekking equipment. Our team will communicate relevant changes and explain the available options if weather conditions affect your journey.
