Cusco – Overnight Bus to Puerto Maldonado

Your Amazon adventure begins in the evening. We will pick you up directly from your hotel in Cusco between 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and transfer you to the bus terminal. From there, you’ll board a comfortable overnight bus to Puerto Maldonado, allowing you to rest during the journey and arrive refreshed at the gateway to the Amazon rainforest.

DAY 1

Puerto Maldonado - Kayak to the Monkey Island - Search of Caiman & Capibaras

Upon arrival at the land terminal in puerto Maldonado, you will be greeted and transferred to the office of PERU AMAZON GARDEN LODGE for registration.

You can store any luggage that you won’t need during your jungle stay to avoid inconvenience.

Afterward, you can visit Plaza de Armas in the city and take photos from the Plaza Grau viewpoint, where you can admire the convergence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers.

Next, you will board a typical Amazon jungle boat at Triunfo Port for a 45-minute journey along the Madre de Dios River to our Amazon Garden Lodge.

Upon arrival, there will be a welcome meeting where you’ll be served a delicious local fruit juice and then you can settle into your rooms.

Kayaking and Visit to the Monkey Island

You will put on life jackets and board a boat for a kayaking adventure. A safety boat will accompany the group.

This is a great opportunity to relax and swim in the waters of the Madre de Dios River after your activities in the city.

In front of Amazon Garden Lodge, there is an island inhabited by a group of monkeys that are accustomed to human presence.

You can get close to them, feed them, and observe their interactions with different species. It’s a beautiful experience with these charming creatures.

Afterward, you will return to the lodge and take a break in the afternoon.

You can enjoy drinks from the bar and relax in hammocks by the Madre de Dios River, where you can witness the sunset in front of Monkey Island.

DAY 2

Amazon Garden Lodge - Sandoval Lake - Picnic Lunch

At 8:00 a.m., we depart from the lodge by boat, gliding along the Madre de Dios River toward the entrance of Lake Sandoval, a scenic journey of approximately 20 minutes surrounded by pristine rainforest.

Upon arrival, we disembark and take a short walk to the Lake Sandoval control post, where we will register and present our entrance tickets to the Tambopata National Reserve, officially entering one of the most biodiverse protected areas in the Amazon.

We then continue with a 3 km (1.9 miles) guided hike, lasting about 45 minutes, along a well-maintained trail deep in the jungle. Along the way, your guide will point out an impressive variety of Amazonian flora, while keeping an eye out for wildlife. With some luck, you may spot colorful birds, monkeys, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and a fascinating array of insects and arachnids that call this ecosystem home.

Reaching the shores of Lake Sandoval is a moment to savor. You’ll have time to swim in its calm, crystal-clear waters, an incredibly refreshing experience in the heart of the rainforest. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared jungle lunch, offering authentic local flavors.

In the afternoon, we’ll board a rowboat and quietly explore the lake, maximizing our chances of observing wildlife. We will set off on a three-hour journey, starting with a one-hour boat ride to Puerto Maldonado, followed by a comfortable bus drive along the Interoceanic Highway. From there, we take a quieter scenic route with minimal traffic that leads us to the banks of the Tambopata River.

Awaiting us will be our private boat and experienced river pilot, ready to take us upstream for approximately 30 minutes through one of the most pristine sections of the river. Along the way, keep your eyes open for riverside birds, capybaras, and white caimans basking along the shores.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink and a brief orientation outlining the services and facilities available during your stay. After check-in, you’ll have time to settle into your rooms and explore the natural surroundings at your own pace.

DAY 4

Parrots and Parakeets Clay Lick (Cachuela) – Puerto Maldonado

Deep in the Amazon rainforest of the Madre de Dios region, parrots and parakeets gather each day at natural clay licks, mineral-rich clay walls found along the riverbanks. These unique sites provide vital salts and nutrients that help the birds digest their food and neutralize natural toxins present in the fruits, seeds, and flowers of the jungle.

In the early morning hours, the rainforest comes alive with color and sound as hundreds of parrots and parakeets descend upon the clay walls, creating one of the most spectacular and photogenic wildlife displays in the Amazon.
