The Huchuy Qosqo Trek is a short and scenic trekking route that leads to the Inca archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo. It is considered one of the easiest and most accessible alternative treks near Cusco, offering a mix of Andean landscapes, cultural sites, and views over the Sacred Valley.
Huchuy Qosqo is located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, north of Cusco, at an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters (11,811 ft). The trek usually starts from villages such as Tambomachay, Patabamba, or Tauca, and ends near Lamay in the Sacred Valley.
The trek is considered easy to moderate, making it ideal for travelers with limited trekking experience or those who want a gentler hike. While there is some uphill walking, the altitude is lower than many other treks around Cusco, and no technical skills are required.
The Huchuy Qosqo Trek can be done as a 1-day trek or combined with a Sacred Valley visit or Machu Picchu for a 2-day itinerary. The hiking time typically ranges from 4 to 6 hours, depending on the starting point and pace.
Along the trek, you will see high Andean plains, mountain passes, traditional villages, llamas and alpacas, and panoramic views of the Sacred Valley. At the site of Huchuy Qosqo, you’ll explore Inca terraces, stone buildings, and ceremonial areas overlooking the Urubamba River.
The best time to hike is during the dry season, from May to September, when weather conditions are more stable. The trek is possible year-round, but the rainy season (November to March) may bring muddy trails and reduced visibility.
