Choosing the right tour makes a big difference in your overall experience. Our Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain tour 8 days is designed to offer a smooth, well-organized journey with added value in every step:
Our tour offers a complete 8-day route that combines Peru’s most important destinations in a single itinerary, with well-organized timing, included services, and an experience designed so you can simply focus on enjoying the journey.
Arrive in Lima, the bustling capital of Peru. Upon arrival at Jorge Chavez International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative and privately transferred to your chosen hotel, where you can rest for the night.
Start your day with a guided tour exploring Lima, known as the “City of Kings.” Highlights of the tour include the historic center, the Republican Square of San Martin, and the famous Plaza de Armas (505 ft or 154 m). You’ll also visit the Convent of San Francisco, known for its intricate catacombs. The tour concludes with a visit to the modern Miraflores district, where you can relax in the Park of Love, enjoying views of the Pacific Ocean. The tour lasts about four hours.
After breakfast, you’ll transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco (11,152 ft or 3,399 m). Upon arrival, take the rest of the day to explore Cusco at your own pace, wandering through its shops, cafes, and restaurants.
Start early as you head toward Pitumarca, a town south of Cusco. This is a quick stop to stock up on any essentials like water or snacks before continuing your journey. As you drive, enjoy stunning landscapes featuring multicolored mountains, snow-capped peaks, and local wildlife such as llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas.
Around 6:30 a.m., you’ll reach Japura (14,189 ft or 4,325 m), where you’ll have a hearty Andean breakfast prepared by your chef. From here, you’ll begin the three-hour trek toward Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca (16,466 ft or 5,033 m), where you can take in the stunning views of the famous multicolored peaks.
After spending time at the summit, you’ll trek back to Japura for lunch before returning to Cusco in the evening.
Today, you’ll embark on one of South America’s most scenic train rides to the town of Aguas Calientes (6,693 ft or 2,040 m), the gateway to Machu Picchu. The train journey offers stunning views of the Andean mountains and jungle scenery.
Machu Picchu remained hidden from the world for centuries, partly due to its remote and elevated location. The town of Aguas Calientes is just a short bus ride away from the famous site. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Aguas Calientes for an overnight stay.
Early in the morning, you’ll take a bus up the steep road to the ancient Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu. For those up to the challenge, you can also hike to the top of Huayna Picchu (8,920 ft or 2,720 m), which offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding area. The number of visitors to Huayna Picchu is limited to 200 per day, so booking early is essential.
Afterward, enjoy a guided tour of Machu Picchu, exploring key sites like the Temple of the Moon, the Great Cavern, and the Temple of the Sun. You’ll also visit the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), a stunning vantage point with a perfect view of Machu Picchu.
In the afternoon, return by train to Cusco, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel for the night.
In the morning, transfer to Cusco’s airport for your flight back to Lima. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for your final night in Peru.
At the scheduled time, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your international flight home.
Acclimatization: Spend your first day in Cusco resting, walking slowly, and avoiding heavy meals or alcohol. This helps your body adjust before the Rainbow Mountain hike, which reaches over 5,000 m.
Hydration and altitude care: Drink water consistently throughout the day and consider coca tea or altitude pills if needed. Bringing electrolyte packets can also help maintain energy during hikes.
For Rainbow Mountain:
Gloves, beanie, and thermal layers for cold early morning temperatures
Walking sticks (optional but helpful on steep sections)
Extra snacks and water
Booking tip: Reserve Huayna Picchu permits in advance, as availability is limited to around 200 people per day.
Physical preparation: Moderate fitness is recommended. While most of the trip is comfortable, the Rainbow Mountain hike is demanding due to altitude. Light cardio preparation before traveling can improve your experience.
If you’re planning to book one of the best Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain tour packages, it’s normal to have questions before confirming your trip. Here you’ll find clear answers based on this 8-day itinerary, including logistics, altitude, and what to expect during the journey.
This package includes airport transfers, domestic flights (Lima–Cusco–Lima), hotel accommodation, guided tours in Lima and Machu Picchu, train tickets to Aguas Calientes, entrance tickets, and selected meals. It is designed as a complete and organized experience.
The hike is considered moderate to challenging due to the altitude (5,033 m / 16,466 ft). While the distance is manageable, the elevation can make it physically demanding, so proper acclimatization in Cusco is essential.
A moderate level of fitness is recommended. Most of the tour is comfortable, but the Rainbow Mountain day requires endurance due to altitude. No technical trekking experience is needed.
The best time is during the dry season (April to October), when weather conditions are more stable. It’s recommended to book in advance, especially between May and September.
Huayna Picchu is optional and subject to availability. Permits are limited, so it’s important to request it in advance when booking your Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain tour 8 days.
This itinerary includes time in Cusco before the hike, which helps with acclimatization. Ideally, at least one full day at altitude is recommended before attempting the hike.
You should bring layered clothing, hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, water, snacks, and a small backpack. For Rainbow Mountain, warm clothing is essential due to early morning cold temperatures.
The tour is suitable for most travelers, but participants should be in good health. The Rainbow Mountain hike may not be ideal for very young children or travelers with altitude sensitivity.
This tour combines Peru’s most requested destinations in one itinerary, with organized logistics, guided experiences, and a balance between comfort and adventure, making it a convenient option for travelers who want to see the highlights in 8 days.
The tour includes Lima (city tour), Cusco (free time), Rainbow Mountain (full-day hike), Aguas Calientes (overnight stay), and Machu Picchu (guided visit with optional Huayna Picchu).
Check availability, choose your options, send your request, and confirm with a deposit. Booking in advance is recommended to secure tickets and permits.
