Itinerary
DAY 1

CUSCO – KM 104 – WIÑAY WAYNA – SUN GATE – MACHU PICCHU

Your Inca Trail adventure begins!

Rise early to start your journey. Your guide will pick you up from your Cusco hotel at 4 a.m. Relax or rest in our comfortable, private transportation to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival at the train station, the guide will provide you with a lunchbox to add to your daypack. The train departs Ollantaytambo at 6:10 a.m., giving you just over an hour to enjoy the scenery and have breakfast (not included).

Disembark at the renowned Km 104, where your trek begins (2,000m/6,560 ft. above sea level). After crossing the Urubamba River on a charming footbridge, present your passport at the checkpoint and visit your first Inca site nearby. The first hour and a half is a gentle uphill climb, with stops at several viewpoints offering expansive views of the Urubamba River. You will pass through various microclimates, including cloud forests, so be prepared for damp conditions or even rain at any time of year. The following hour and a half features a slightly steeper climb, culminating in a beautiful waterfall as your reward.

After crossing the bridge below the waterfall, take time for photos as you gaze up at the magnificent Wiñay Wayna (2,600m/8,500ft above sea level). These remarkable Inca ruins have a captivating history, with some areas still concealed by dense jungle. Close to Machu Picchu, you will hike through lush subtropical jungle. Your guide will explain the ruins, the incredible flora and fauna of the region, and answer any questions you have before the short 5-minute walk to the lunch spot.

Enjoy your hearty, gourmet lunch and take in the tropical flowers around the campsite. Please inform us of any food allergies or dietary restrictions when booking!

After lunch, you will walk mostly on flat terrain to the Sun Gate. The hour-long walk is a gentle up-and-down path, ending with a set of steep stairs carved into the bedrock by the Incas, known as the “Gringo Killers.” Once you reach the Sun Gate, take in your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. Savor the moment and take photos. The final 60 minutes descending from the Sun Gate provide more opportunities to photograph Machu Picchu. Walk slowly, enjoy the descent, and ask your guide about the historical sites you pass on your way down to Machu Picchu.

Upon reaching Machu Picchu, you will have time to take more photos from the viewing platforms above the site (Guard House), where you can capture the iconic postcard images of Machu Picchu. Arriving in the afternoon, as the archaeological area starts to clear of tourists, offers the chance to take beautiful photos in the softer afternoon light with fewer people in the background. Enjoy this magical experience before taking the bus down to Puente Ruinas, where we will camp for the night.

Travel guide to the 2 day Inca trail with camping

The 2-Day Inca Trail Hike with Camping is a perfect option for travelers looking to experience the legendary Inca Trail within a shorter time frame, while still enjoying the thrill of camping in the Andes. This guide will help you prepare for the journey, covering everything from recommendations and tips to how to dress and physical preparation.

Overview of the 2 Day Inca Trail hike with Camping

The Inca Trail Camping begins at Km 104 and leads to Machu Picchu, covering approximately 10 kilometers. It includes a night of camping near the ruins or along the trail, providing a more authentic and adventurous feel compared to hotel accommodations.

This hike gives you a taste of the longer Inca Trail while allowing more flexibility, perfect for those with limited time or less trekking experience.

Weather and best time to go

The weather along the 2 days Inca Trail hike with Camping can be variable, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

Dry Season (May to September): The most popular time to hike, with clear skies and cool temperatures. Nighttime temperatures can drop significantly when camping, so prepare for colder nights.

Rainy Season (November to March): While the trail is open, expect frequent rain, slippery paths, and lower visibility. However, the landscape will be lush and green.

Shoulder Seasons (April and October): These months offer a balance between fewer crowds and decent weather. Some rain is possible, but it’s not as intense as during the rainy season.

How to dress for the 2 day Inca Trail with Camping

When preparing for the Short Inca Trail with Camping, it’s crucial to pack light but smart, as you’ll carry most of your gear yourself. Here’s a basic guide to dressing:

Layering System: Weather can change quickly, so dress in layers.

Base Layer: Moisture-wicking t-shirt or long sleeve.

Mid Layer: Fleece or lightweight sweater.

Outer Layer: Waterproof jacket or rain poncho.

Hiking Pants: Quick-dry and durable pants are essential for comfort.

Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support are a must. Pack an extra pair of socks.

Hat and Gloves: Protect against sun exposure and cold evenings.

Sun Protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat to shield from UV rays.

Camping Gear: While most tour operators provide tents and sleeping bags, confirm what’s included before packing extra.

Physical preparation for the Inca Trail 2 days by camp

Though the Short Inca Trail Hike with Camping is less strenuous than the full 4 or 5-day trek, it still requires physical endurance, especially due to the altitude and steep ascents.

Cardio Training: Build up your stamina with cardio exercises such as running, cycling, or swimming.

Leg Strength: Hike uphill or practice stair-climbing to prepare for the steep portions of the trail.

Acclimatization: Spend a couple of days in Cusco (3,400m) before starting the trek to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Tips for the 2 days inca trail with camping

  • Book in Advance: Permits for the Inca Trail are limited and tend to sell out quickly, even for shorter hikes. Book your spot several months ahead.
  • Pack Light: Carry only essentials, as you’ll need to manage your own gear. Tour operators typically provide camping gear, but check in advance.
  • Hydrate: Altitude can cause dehydration, so drink plenty of water. Bring a reusable bottle or hydration pack.
  • Trekking Poles: Highly recommended for stability on steep sections. Make sure they have rubber tips, as metal-tipped poles are not allowed on the trail.
  • Acclimatize: Give your body time to adapt to the altitude by staying in Cusco for a couple of days before the trek.

Restrictions and regulations

  • Permits required: Just like the longer Inca Trail, the Short Inca trail with Camping requires a permit, which is limited in availability. Permits can only be secured through licensed tour operators.
  • Camping locations: You are only allowed to camp at designated sites along the trail.
  • Group size: Most tours follow strict group size limits, so expect a more intimate experience compared to larger tourist spots.
  • No solo hikers: Independent hiking is not allowed; you must go with an authorized guide and group.

Frequently asked questions about the 2 day Inca trail with camping

Are you ready to experience the magic of the inca trail with camping? If you have questions, you’ve come to the right place! Here, we’ll cover everything you need to know to make your adventure epic, from what to pack to what it’ll be like to sleep under the stars. Get ready for an unforgettable experience!

1. What is the 2 days inca trail with camping?

The Inca Trail with camping is a 2-day trek starting at Km 104, combining Inca ruins, cloud forest, and the iconic Sun Gate arrival to Machu Picchu. Instead of a hotel, you camp overnight for a more adventurous experience.

2. How difficult is the trek?

The trek is considered moderately to very challenging due to the altitude and varying terrains. The Salkantay portion reaches high altitudes, and the Inca Trail Camping includes steep paths. Hikers should be in good physical condition and acclimatized to the altitude, as the high elevation adds to the challenge.

3. What’s special about the Salkantay portion?

The Salkantay trek is known for its dramatic, diverse landscapes. You’ll hike through snow-capped mountains, pass by the impressive Salkantay Peak (6,271 meters), and descend into cloud forests. The trek offers fewer crowds than the classic Inca Trail, giving you a more secluded, immersive experience before joining the shorter Inca Trail.

4. How does the 2 day Inca trail with camping start?

The Inca Trail 2 Days with Camping starts at Km 104 on the Machu Picchu railway. From here, trekkers hike towards Wiñay Wayna, one of the most beautiful and lesser-known Inca sites. The trek culminates at the Sun Gate, where you’ll get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu, a true highlight.

5. Can I camp on the 2 days Inca Trail?

Yes, the Inca Trail hike with Camping includes an overnight camp, typically near Wiñay Wayna. This option allows hikers to spend the night under the stars, closer to the trail, and experience the trek more authentically, compared to those who stay in hotels in Aguas Calientes.

6. What are the key highlights?

The combination of Salkantay’s high-altitude mountain passes and the 2 days Inca Trail leads to unforgettable highlights: stunning views of snow-capped peaks, the mystical Wiñay Wayna ruins, and the iconic approach to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. Camping under the stars adds another dimension of adventure to the experience.

7. When is the best time to go?

The best time to hike is during the dry season, from May to September. Clear skies, lower chances of rain, and pleasant daytime temperatures make this period ideal for both the Salkantay portion and the 2 days Inca Trail Hike with Camping. Nights can be cold, especially at higher altitudes, so prepare accordingly.

8. How should I prepare physically?

Due to the demanding nature of the trek, preparation should include cardio training (like running or cycling) to build endurance. Hikers should also focus on strength training for their legs and acclimatization to high altitudes. Spending a few days in Cusco before the trek will help your body adjust to the altitude.
