BEST 4 Day Tambopata Jungle Tour Sandoval Lake and Monkey Island

Visiting the 4 Day Tambopata Jungle Reserve offers you a unique experience in the Amazon jungle. The first day we immersed ourselves in the diversity of jungle life by exploring the upper part of Tambopata.

This area has an abundance of flora and fauna, and several species of birds, monkeys and other wild animals.

We will visit Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, an amazing natural spectacle. Here, macaws and parrots congregate to eat essential minerals on the clay walls, where we can appreciate a spectacle full of biodiversity unique to the region.

This phenomenon provides the opportunity to admire these birds in their natural habitat.

On your trip to the Reserve we will visit Sandoval Lake, we will go by boat on the lake, observing alligators, otters and water birds. Sandoval Lake offers a fascinating contrast to the lushness of Tambopata and the bustle of Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.

The Tour to the Tambopata reserve will give you an exciting experience. Connecting with nature in this remote corner of the Amazon is a unique opportunity to appreciate the importance of preserving these ecosystems for future generations.

In short, the 4-day excursion is a complete immersion in the wonderful biodiversity of the Tambopata National Reserve.

Itinerary
DAY 1

Puerto Maldonado - Kayak to the Monkey Island - Search of Caiman & Capibaras

Upon arrival at the airport or land terminal, you will be greeted and transferred to the office of PERU AMAZON GARDEN LODGE for registration.

You can store any luggage that you won’t need during your jungle stay to avoid inconvenience.

Afterward, you can visit Plaza de Armas in the city and take photos from the Plaza Grau viewpoint, where you can admire the convergence of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers.

Next, you will board a typical Amazon jungle boat at Triunfo Port for a 45-minute journey along the Madre de Dios River to our Amazon Garden Lodge.

Upon arrival, there will be a welcome meeting where you’ll be served a delicious local fruit juice and then you can settle into your rooms.

Kayaking and Visit to the Monkey Island

You will put on life jackets and board a boat for a kayaking adventure. A safety boat will accompany the group.

This is a great opportunity to relax and swim in the waters of the Madre de Dios River after your activities in the city.

In front of Amazon Garden Lodge, there is an island inhabited by a group of monkeys that are accustomed to human presence.

You can get close to them, feed them, and observe their interactions with different species. It’s a beautiful experience with these charming creatures.

Afterward, you will return to the lodge and take a break in the afternoon.

You can enjoy drinks from the bar and relax in hammocks by the Madre de Dios River, where you can witness the sunset in front of Monkey Island.

Search of Caiman (Caiman Spotting)

After settling in, you will board a boat equipped with a float and travel along the riverbank to observe alligators on the beaches. You may also spot other nocturnal animals such as birds and Capybaras, the largest rodents in the world.

DAY 2

Amazon Garden Lodge - Sandoval Lake - Picnic Lunch

At 8:00 am, we’ll begin our journey from our lodge by boat along the Madre de Dios River, heading towards the entrance of Sandoval Lake, which will take approximately 20 minutes.

Upon arrival, we’ll disembark and walk a short distance to the Lake Sandoval control post, where we’ll register and present our entrance tickets for the Tambopata National Reserve.

From there, we’ll continue our trip with a 3 km (1.9 miles) hike lasting around 45 minutes.

During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to admire a wide variety of flora and, if we’re lucky, spot diverse fauna such as birds, monkeys, rodents, arachnids, insects, reptiles, and amphibians.

Once we reach the lake’s shores, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in its pristine waters. Afterwards, we’ll indulge in a delicious and authentic jungle lunch.

Following the meal, we’ll take a rowing boat and explore the lake, searching for bird species like hoatzines, cormorants, anhingas, and, with luck, the highlight of Lake Sandoval—the playful River Otters.

In the afternoon, at a time agreed upon with your guide, we’ll leave the lake and return to the banks of the Madre de Dios River. There, our boat will be waiting to transport us to the Amazon Garden Lodge.

For those interested, there’s an optional night walk available. Finally, we’ll have dinner and spend the night at the lodge.

DAY 3

Amazon Garden Lodge - Tambopata - Night Walk

On the third day, our activities will begin at 8:30 in the morning at our lodging, the remarkable AMAZON GARDEN LODGE.

We will embark on a three-hour tour, beginning with an hour-long journey by boat to puerto maldonad and then we take a bus along the interoceanic highway, followed by a tranquil route with minimal traffic that will lead us to the banks of the Tambopata river.

There, our boat and skilled driver will be eagerly awaiting us, ready to transport us upstream for approximately 30 minutes until we reach our Lodge.”

Along the way, we will have the opportunity to witness a variety of riverside birds, capybaras, and white caimans.

Upon our arrival at the lodge, a refreshing welcome drink will be provided, along with a brief overview of the services available during our stay.

Following the check-in process and settling into our respective rooms, you will have the chance to explore the surroundings and become more acquainted with the area.

After a satisfying lunch, we will take a short break before embarking on a walk through a primary forest adorned with ancient trees.

Throughout the trek, our knowledgeable guide will share insightful information about significant economic activities in our region, such as agriculture, mining, logging, chestnut gathering (Brazil nut), and ecotourism.

Additionally, this excursion presents an excellent opportunity to spot monkeys and other mammals thriving in their natural habitats.

As the sun begins to set, we will return to the lodge to retrieve our flashlights, preparing for an evening adventure.

We will venture out to observe alligators, capybaras, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of a feline predator prowling near the riverside in search of prey.

Following a satisfying dinner, for those still energized and interested, we can embark on a short nocturnal hike.

This excursion will provide the chance to discover insects, arachnids, tarantulas, and potentially encounter creatures such as snakes, armadillos, night monkeys, or even tapirs in close proximity to the lodge.

DAY 4

Parrots and Parakeets Clay Lick (Cachuela) – Puerto Maldonado

In the Amazon rainforest of the Madre de Dios region, parrots and parakeets gather daily at natural clay licks—mineral-rich clay walls located along riverbanks. These sites provide essential salts and minerals that help the birds metabolize their diet and neutralize the toxins found in the fruits, seeds, and flowers they consume.

In the early morning hours, this colorful spectacle takes place as hundreds of birds flock to the clay walls.

Around 7:00 a.m., we will return to the lodge for breakfast. Afterwards, we will head back to Puerto Maldonado, where you will be transferred to the airport or bus terminal for your departure.
