Frequently asked questions about Nazca Lines tours

Frequently asked questions about Nazca Lines tours

Here you’ll find clear answers to the most frequently asked questions about Nazca Lines tours, including flight options, safety measures, duration, weather conditions, and what you’ll see during the experience.

The Nazca Lines are a series of ancient geoglyphs created by the Nazca culture between 500 BCE and 500 CE. These massive figures depict animals, plants, geometric shapes, and symbols, and are best seen from the air. Their purpose is still debated, with theories ranging from astronomical calendars to ceremonial or ritual use.

The Nazca Lines are located in the Nazca Desert, in southern Peru, between the towns of Nazca and Palpa, about 450 km (280 miles) south of Lima. The site lies at an altitude of approximately 500 meters (1,640 ft) above sea level, in one of the driest regions of the country.

The Nazca Lines were made by removing the dark, oxidized stones from the desert surface to reveal the lighter-colored soil beneath. This simple but precise technique allowed the designs to remain preserved for centuries due to the region’s extremely dry climate and low wind activity.

The most common way to visit the Nazca Lines from Lima is by bus or private transport to Nazca, followed by a scenic flight over the lines from Nazca Airport. The journey from Lima to Nazca takes about 6–7 hours by road. Some travelers also combine Nazca with Paracas and Huacachina as part of a multi-day itinerary.

Tours to Nazca Lines usually include transportation to Nazca, airport assistance, a flight over the geoglyphs, and a brief explanation from pilots or guides. Multi-day tours may also include visits to Paracas National Reserve, Ballestas Islands, and the Huacachina Oasis.

The flight lasts approximately 30 to 35 minutes and covers the main figures, including the Monkey, Hummingbird, Condor, Spider, and Astronaut.
