Tambopata and Manu Reserved Zone Tour 5 Days Overview

Manu National Park, located in Peru’s Madre de Dios region, is both a biosphere reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as one of the most extensive and biologically diverse protected areas in South America. The Manu Reserved Zone Tour 5 Days from Cusco gives travelers the chance to experience this incredible park up close, exploring its pristine forests, rivers, and wildlife alongside expert local guides.

Covering approximately 1.7 million hectares, the park spans a remarkable range of ecosystems—from the lowland Amazon rainforest to the high peaks of the Andes Mountains. This dramatic variation in altitude and climate is the foundation of Manu’s extraordinary biodiversity, making it a living laboratory of nature.

The park is divided into three distinct management zones:

  • Special Use Zone – reserved exclusively for scientific research and environmental education.
  • Reserved Zone – the most strictly protected area, with access restricted to authorized researchers and small groups on guided eco-tours.
  • Cultural Zone – home to indigenous groups such as the Matsigenka and Amahuaca, who have lived in harmony with the forest for centuries, maintaining their ancestral traditions.

Manu is a sanctuary for an astonishing array of wildlife: more than 800 bird species, 200 mammals, and 100 reptiles and amphibians, alongside thousands of plant species. Among its most emblematic inhabitants are the jaguar, giant anteater, Amazonian tapir, and the vibrant blue-headed macaw.

Beyond its rich biodiversity, the park captivates with its spectacular landscapes—from dense rainforests and winding rivers to snow-capped Andean summits. Highlights include the Manu Canyon, a breathtaking natural formation offering sweeping views and serving as a unique refuge for diverse flora and fauna.

Itinerary
DAY 1

Cusco – Soga de Oro Lodge

We begin our journey in Cusco, traveling by private bus toward the Manu region. Our first stop will be the fascinating pre-Inca burial towers of Ninamarca, a site steeped in history and mystery. Continuing through the Andean highlands, we’ll reach the picturesque folkloric town of Paucartambo, renowned for its traditional architecture and vibrant cultural heritage. Here, we’ll take a short walk to explore its charming streets before ascending to Tres Cruces, the highest viewpoint on the route and the natural gateway to Manu National Park.

From this dramatic vantage point, we descend into the lush Cloud Forest, a biodiversity hotspot. In San Pedro, we’ll enjoy a guided one-hour walk, with the chance to spot Peru’s national bird, the Cock of the Rock, performing its striking courtship dance. Along the trail, we may also encounter monkeys, exotic plants, and brightly colored flowers unique to this ecosystem.

Our journey continues to the port of Atalaya, where we’ll board a motorized canoe for a scenic 40-minute ride along the river to reach the welcoming Soga de Oro Lodge. Upon arrival, guests will have time to relax and settle in before enjoying a freshly prepared dinner. Later in the evening, we’ll set out on an exciting night walk through the rainforest, where we’ll search for tarantulas, scorpions, snakes, and other fascinating nocturnal creatures that bring the jungle to life after dark.

DAY 2

Soga de Oro Lodge – Manu Reserved Zone – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge

After an early breakfast at the lodge, we continue our journey downstream by motorized canoe toward the native community of Diamante, one of the largest settlements of the Harakmbut people. Here, we’ll have the opportunity to learn about their ancestral traditions, daily lifestyle, and deep connection with the rainforest.

Our adventure then takes us to the small riverside village of Boca Manu, where we’ll pause to enjoy refreshing cold drinks and a short rest before entering the Restricted Zone of Manu National Park—one of the most pristine and biodiverse areas on the planet.

The first official checkpoint, Limonal, marks our entry into this protected paradise. From here, we navigate deeper into the park, journeying along meandering rivers bordered by dense forest teeming with life. As we travel, there will be excellent chances to spot an extraordinary variety of wildlife: capybaras, peccaries, troops of monkeys, brilliant macaws and herons, black and white caimans, and with some luck, even a glimpse of the elusive jaguar resting along the riverbanks.

By the afternoon, we arrive at the Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, a rustic yet comfortable eco-lodge built and managed by the Matsiguenka people, the ancestral stewards of this region. Nestled deep within the Manu jungle, the lodge offers an authentic cultural encounter, allowing visitors not only to experience the richness of the rainforest but also to connect with the knowledge and traditions of its original inhabitants.

DAY 3

Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Cocha Otorongo & Cocha Salvador

Today is dedicated to a full day of exploration within the pristine heart of the Manu Reserved Zone. Setting out from the lodge, we venture deep into the jungle along trails that reveal the richness of this unique ecosystem. With the guidance of our naturalist, we will encounter a remarkable array of wildlife: tapirs, collared peccaries, playful troops of monkeys, curious coatis, and an impressive diversity of birdlife, including eagles, parrots, and toucans. Along the way, we will also discover the rainforest’s botanical treasures—medicinal plants, exotic flowers, and towering centuries-old trees that define the Amazonian landscape.

After a picnic-style jungle lunch, we continue toward two of the most iconic oxbow lakes of Manu: Cocha Salvador and Cocha Otorongo. At Cocha Salvador, we’ll embark on a peaceful catamaran excursion, gliding across the mirror-like waters as we search for white caimans, colorful aquatic birds, and the endangered Giant River Otter, one of the Amazon’s most charismatic species. At Cocha Otorongo, we’ll ascend an observation tower that overlooks the lake, offering panoramic views and excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting.

As the day winds down, we return to the Casa Matsiguenka Lodge to enjoy dinner and a restful evening, immersed in the sounds of the rainforest.

About Casa Matsiguenka
Built following traditional Matsiguenka architectural techniques, the lodge features 12 fully screened twin rooms, each equipped with comfortable beds and mosquito nets. Guests can enjoy a network of private forest trails, always accompanied by knowledgeable local Matsiguenka guides. The lodge also houses an interpretation center to learn more about the culture and natural history of Manu, and offers a small shop with handmade souvenirs crafted by the community.

DAY 4

Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Dorado Lodge

After breakfast at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, we begin our return journey downstream toward Boca Manu, traveling once again through the heart of the rainforest. Along the riverbanks, there is always the exciting possibility of spotting the elusive jaguar, a majestic predator that occasionally reveals itself to fortunate travelers.

We will make a cultural stop at the native community of Diamante, where visitors can learn about their traditions, daily lifestyle, and the challenges of living in harmony with the Amazon. For those interested, there will also be the opportunity to purchase handcrafted souvenirs, made with natural materials and traditional techniques passed down through generations.

In the afternoon, we’ll explore a nearby lake, where we may encounter species such as the unique clay lizard and the lowland tapir, South America’s largest terrestrial mammal. Our journey then continues to the welcoming Dorado Lodge, where guests can settle in and enjoy the serene atmosphere of the rainforest.

As night falls, we’ll gather around a bonfire—a perfect setting to share stories, enjoy refreshing drinks, and reflect on the day’s adventures—before retiring for a restful night surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.

DAY 5

Dorado Lodge – Hot Springs – Cusco

We start the day early, boarding our motorized canoe for the return journey upstream to Atalaya Port, where our private vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Cusco.

On the way, we make a memorable stop at a natural hot spring, an ideal spot to relax and unwind after days of exploration. Here, you’ll have time to enjoy a soothing soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters, surrounded by the lush greenery of the rainforest—an authentic Amazonian spa experience in the heart of nature.

Feeling refreshed, we continue our scenic drive through the Cloud Forest, once again admiring its misty peaks, waterfalls, and vibrant vegetation. We’ll also pass through the picturesque colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its traditional architecture and cultural heritage.

Our journey concludes with the final stretch across the Andean highlands, offering breathtaking mountain vistas before descending back into the city of Cusco, where we expect to arrive by evening.
