Recommended Remedies:

  • Water: Stay hydrated.
  • Coca Tea: A traditional remedy in Peru.
  • Oxygen: Available if needed; our guides are trained to assist with altitude sickness.

Additional Tips: You can also book the Cusco City Tour or Sacred Valley Tour during your acclimatization period. Check out our Day Tours on our homepage.

Frequently asked questions

Before booking, it’s normal to have a few questions about this 4 day tour. Here are the ones travelers ask us the most.

1. What is the highest altitude reached during the tour?

You’ll reach 5,020 m (16,466 ft) at the summit of Rainbow Mountain, so yes, it’s a real challenge when it comes to altitude. Even the starting point of the hike isn’t low, Llacto sits at 4,638 m (15,216 ft), so it helps to be acclimatized before you get there.

2. Does the tour include entry to Huayna Picchu?

Not by default. If you decide to add it as an extra, keep in mind that portion of the hike is unguided, so it’s more of a personal climb than a guided segment.

3. Which train do you take to reach Aguas Calientes?

You’ll travel on the Expedition Train, which departs Ollantaytambo at 7:04pm and arrives in Aguas Calientes around 8:45pm. If you’d rather travel in more comfort, you can upgrade to the Vistadome Train for an additional $67 USD, with departures at 2:55pm, 3:20pm, 4:22pm, or 4:43pm.

4. What time does the Rainbow Mountain trek day start?

It’s an early start, we pick you up from your hotel at 4:00am. After a 3 hour drive to Llacto, you’ll begin the hike, which takes about 1.5 hours to reach the summit.

5. Are meals included during the tour?

It depends on the day. Day 1 doesn’t include any meals, day 2 includes breakfast and dinner, day 3 includes breakfast only, and day 4, once you’re at Rainbow Mountain, includes breakfast and lunch prepared by our cook.

6. Is it possible to see sunrise at Machu Picchu?

Yes, and it’s one of the most anticipated moments of the trip. You’ll take one of the first buses up to the citadel to arrive just before sunrise, then your guide leads a 2 hour tour through the agricultural, residential, and religious sectors.
