This tour is ideal for those looking to explore a breathtaking natural wonder without committing to a multi-day trek. The hike takes place at high altitudes, but the experience is worth every step.

Weather and Climate at Humantay Lake

Daytime Temperatures

During the day, temperatures at Humantay Lake can range from 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 64°F), depending on the season. Even though it can be sunny, the winds can make it feel cooler, especially near the lake.

Nighttime Temperatures

For those doing the Humantay Lake (Soraypampa) Full Day hike, it’s important to note that temperatures drop significantly at night in this region, sometimes falling to freezing levels. However, as this is a day tour, you likely won’t experience the colder nighttime temperatures unless you camp in Soraypampa.

Seasonal Variations

The dry season, from May to October, is the best time for the Humantay Lake Full Day Tour in Cusco. Clear skies and stable weather make the hike more enjoyable. The wet season, from November to April, brings frequent rain and muddy trails, but the surrounding landscapes are lush and green during this time.

Tips for Dressing and Packing for Humantay Lake

Layering Your Clothing

Because of the changing temperatures, it’s essential to dress in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by a warm fleece or jacket, and a waterproof outer layer in case of rain. Even in the dry season, conditions can change rapidly in the Andes.

Footwear

Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended for the Humantay Lake Tour from Cusco. The trail can be steep and rocky, and in the wet season, it can become slippery.

Gear Essentials

Pack a small daypack with essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a refillable water bottle. For the 1-Day Humantay Lake hike, also bring high-energy snacks like granola bars or fruit to keep your energy up during the ascent.

Physical Preparation for the Hike

Acclimatization

Humantay Lake sits at an altitude of 4,200 meters (13,779 feet), making acclimatization critical. Spending a couple of days in Cusco, which is at 3,400 meters (11,154 feet), before attempting the Lake Humantay 1 Day Hike – Peru Tours will help prevent altitude sickness.

Fitness Level

The Humantay Lake Day Tour involves a moderate hike, with a steep climb of about 1.5 to 2 hours. To prepare, it’s a good idea to engage in cardio exercises and strength training a few weeks before your trip. Hikers with a basic level of fitness should be able to complete the trek.

Hydration and Nutrition

At high altitudes, staying hydrated is essential. Make sure to drink plenty of water during the hike, and eat light, high-carb snacks to keep your energy up. Coca leaves or coca tea, a traditional remedy, can help reduce the effects of altitude sickness.

Health and Safety Considerations

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a real concern on the Humantay Lake 1 Day tour due to the high elevation. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, and shortness of breath. To minimize these risks, acclimatize in Cusco, hike at a slow and steady pace, and drink plenty of water. If you feel unwell, don’t hesitate to notify your guide.

Vaccinations and Health Precautions

There are no mandatory vaccinations for the Humantay Lake Full Day Tour in Cusco, but it’s always good to have your routine shots up to date. Bring a basic first-aid kit that includes bandages, antiseptic, and altitude sickness medication if necessary.

Trekking Permits and Restrictions

Unlike some other hikes in Peru, the Humantay Lake Tour from Cusco doesn’t require a special permit. However, some agencies may ask for personal identification. Always book with a reputable company to ensure a safe and well-organized trip.

Travel Tips and Final Recommendations

Guided Tours vs. Independent Hiking

While it’s possible to hike to Humantay Lake independently, most travelers prefer to join a guided Humantay Lake Day Tour. The guides provide transportation, offer support, and ensure you stay on the right path. If you’re new to high-altitude hiking, joining a Humantay Lake Tour 1 Day group is highly recommended.

Cultural Respect

The area around Humantay Lake is considered sacred by the local people. Always be respectful of the environment and any rituals or traditions you may encounter. Take photos with care, and never disturb the wildlife or the landscape.

Environmental Responsibility

Pack out everything you bring in. Don’t leave any trash behind, and stay on the marked trails to protect the fragile ecosystem. The Humantay Lake 1 Day hike is a beautiful experience, and preserving its natural beauty is a responsibility for all visitors.

By following these tips and preparing properly, you’ll have an unforgettable experience on the Humantay Lake Full Day Tour in Cusco, surrounded by the incredible beauty of the Andes.
