Manu and Tambopata Reserved Zone Tours 6 Days Overview

Manu National Park is a biosphere reserve and national park located in the Madre de Dios region of Peru. It is one of the largest and most biodiverse parks in South America and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Manu Tour 6 Days covers an extensive area of approximately 1,716,295 hectares, stretching from the lowland Amazon rainforest to the high mountains of the Andes. This varied geography contributes to the incredible biological diversity of the park, hosting a vast array of plant and animal species.

Manu National Park is divided into three main zones: the Special Use Zone, the Reserved Zone, and the Cultural Zone. The Special Use Zone is intended for scientific research and environmental education, while the Reserved Zone is the most strictly protected and only allows access to authorized researchers and scientists. The Cultural Zone is home to indigenous communities, such as the Matsiguenga and Amahuaca, who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries.

The park is home to an astonishing variety of species, including over 800 species of birds, 200 species of mammals, 100 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a diverse range of plants and trees. Iconic species found in the park include the jaguar, giant anteater, Amazonian tapir, and blue-headed macaw.

In addition to its rich biodiversity, Manu National Park is also renowned for its scenic beauty. It features stunning landscapes, ranging from dense tropical rainforests to high snow-capped mountains. It also houses the spectacular Manu Canyon, which offers panoramic views and a unique habitat for numerous species.

DAY 1

Cusco – Pilcopata Lodge

Departing from Cusco in a private bus, our first stop will be at the fascinating pre-Inca burial towers of Ninamarca, an important archaeological site steeped in history. We then journey through the majestic Andes to reach Paucartambo, a picturesque and culturally rich town known for its vibrant traditions and folklore. Here, we’ll enjoy a brief guided walk to explore its charming streets and colonial architecture.

Continuing our ascent, we arrive at Tres Cruces, the highest point of the route and the gateway to Manu National Park, offering sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. From there, we descend into the lush Cloud Forest, a paradise of biodiversity. At San Pedro, we embark on a one-hour nature walk to observe Peru’s national bird, the striking Cock-of-the-Rock, along with a variety of monkeys, exotic plants, and colorful flowers.

By evening, we reach Pilcopata, where we settle into a cozy local lodge for a well-deserved night’s rest, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the forest.

DAY 2

Pilcopata Lodge – Bonanza or Dorado Lodge

After a hearty breakfast, we continue our journey by private bus toward Atalaya, a small river port that serves as our gateway to the lowland jungle. Along the way, we pause to visit a cocoa plantation, where you can learn about the cultivation process and the role cocoa plays in the local economy. We will also make a stop at a scenic viewpoint, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the dense rainforest and winding river below.

Upon arrival in Atalaya, we board a motorized canoe and begin our river adventure to Aguas Calientes, a natural hot spring oasis deep in the forest. Here, you’ll have the chance to relax and bathe in its warm, mineral-rich waters — a rejuvenating pause amid nature.

We then continue our boat journey to Bonanza, where our camping platforms and comfortable lodge accommodations await. After settling in, we set out on an afternoon hike through the jungle, exploring its unique flora and fauna, followed by an opportunity to fish in the river.

In the evening, we return for a freshly prepared dinner before venturing out again for a night walk. Equipped with flashlights, we will search for nocturnal wildlife such as spiders, snakes, and other creatures that bring the jungle to life after dark. We end the day in the comfort of our lodge, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the rainforest.

DAY 3

Bonanza – Casa Matsiguenka Lodge

After breakfast, we continue our river journey downstream along the Alto Madre de Dios to reach the native community of Diamante, one of the largest settlements of the Harakmbut people. Here, you will learn about their daily life, traditions, and ancestral customs, gaining insight into a culture deeply connected to the rainforest.

Following our visit, we head to Boca Manu Village for a short break — the perfect chance to enjoy a refreshing cold drink and relax before venturing deeper into the Manu Biosphere Reserve via the Manu River. Our first checkpoint will be at Limonal Ranger Station (Puesto de Vigilancia Limonal), where park permits are verified.

From here, we continue our boat journey into one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Along the way, keep your camera ready: sightings may include capybaras, white-lipped peccaries, various species of monkeys, brilliantly colored birds, black and white caimans, and with some luck, even a pair of jaguars resting along the riverbank.

By late afternoon, we arrive at the Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, a rustic yet comfortable eco-lodge surrounded by the pristine rainforest of Manu. Exclusively managed by the indigenous Matsiguenka people, the lodge offers an authentic and intimate experience with the forest’s original guardians. For those with energy to spare, an optional night walk is available to explore the jungle’s nocturnal life.

About Casa Matsiguenka
Built following traditional Matsiguenka architectural techniques, the lodge features 12 fully screened twin rooms, each equipped with comfortable beds and mosquito nets. Guests can enjoy a network of private forest trails, always accompanied by knowledgeable local Matsiguenka guides. The lodge also houses an interpretation center to learn more about the culture and natural history of Manu, and offers a small shop with handmade souvenirs crafted by the community.

DAY 4

Casa Matsiguenka Lodge

Today is dedicated to fully immersing ourselves in the wonders of the Manu rainforest. For most of the day, we will explore deep jungle trails, where opportunities abound to spot a rich variety of wildlife. Keep your eyes open for tapirs, collared peccaries, coatis, and several species of monkeys swinging through the canopy. Birdwatchers will be delighted by sightings of harpy eagles, parrots, and toucans, while nature enthusiasts can admire the region’s medicinal plants, exotic flowers, and towering ancient trees.

We will enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of the jungle, surrounded by the natural symphony of the forest. In the afternoon, we visit two of Manu’s most stunning oxbow lakes: Salvador Lake and Otorongo Lake. Traveling by catamaran, we will glide across the calm waters, observing the remarkable wildlife that thrives here, including white and black caimans and the endangered giant river otter — a rare and unforgettable sight.

As the day draws to a close, we return to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge to enjoy dinner and spend the night in the serene heart of the rainforest.

DAY 5

Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Dorado Lodge

After breakfast, we bid farewell to the Casa Matsiguenka Lodge and continue our journey downstream along the Manu River toward Boca Manu. Keep your eyes on the riverbanks, as this stretch is a prime location for spotting wildlife — and if luck is on our side, we may catch sight of the elusive and majestic jaguar resting or hunting along the beaches.

Our route takes us to the native community of Isla de los Valles, where we will have the chance to learn about their traditions, daily life, and deep-rooted connection to the rainforest. This is also an excellent opportunity to support the community by purchasing locally handcrafted goods, each piece made with skill and cultural significance.

In the afternoon, we will visit a nearby oxbow lake, where you can try your hand at fishing for the notorious piranhas, an experience both thrilling and memorable. Afterward, we board our boat once again, navigating upstream along the Alto Madre de Dios River until we reach our destination — the Harpy Lodge.

As evening falls, we gather around a bonfire to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere under the stars, accompanied by drinks and a delicious barbecue dinner, surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon night.

DAY 6

Dorado Lodge – Atalaya – Cusco

As the first light of dawn filters through the rainforest canopy, we awaken to the gentle chorus of the Amazon — the perfect soundtrack to our final morning in this extraordinary wilderness. After breakfast, we pack our belongings and bid a heartfelt farewell to the jungle that has been our home for the past days.

We then board our boat for the scenic journey back along the river to the port of Atalaya, where our private bus will be waiting. From here, we travel through the stunning landscapes of the Andes, gradually leaving the lush tropical forest behind as we ascend toward the highlands. By evening, we arrive in the historic city of Cusco, bringing our unforgettable Manu adventure to a close.
